How to prepare your MacBook for Apple Trade In

Prepare and send your old device to Apple for Trade in.

If you opted to trade in your MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air when you purchased an Apple product, you'll receive a trade-in kit with everything you need to return your device to Apple. If you’re in the Asia-Pacific region, a trade-in kit will be delivered to you or be made available at a designated location.

Customers in the Asia-Pacific region should only follow the steps in the Before you return your MacBook and Return your MacBook sections.

Before you return your MacBook

  1. Back up your data. If you need help transferring data, schedule an appointment at an Apple Authorised Service Provider or an Apple Store at getsupport.apple.com. It is your sole responsibility to back up all existing data, software and/or programs from your product. Apple is not responsible for loss, recovery or compromise of data, software or programs on your trade-in product.

  2. Sign out of iCloud.

  3. Turn off your firmware password.

  4. Deauthorise your computer for content purchases.

  5. Erase your hard disk.

  6. Remove all accessories. If accessories are included in the return, they will be recycled and cannot be returned to you.

Pack your product using the included packaging materials

If you are in the Asia-Pacific region, continue to the Return your MacBook to Applesection.

  1. Remove the insert from the box.

  2. Fold the side flaps of the insert up to loosen the plastic sleeve.

  3. Slide your device under the plastic sleeve. (Do not include extra items or accessories. If you include extra items in the box, these won't be returned to you.)

  4. Fold down the side flaps of the insert.

  5. Push in the top and bottom flaps of the insert to re-fold them.

  6. Place the insert into the box.

  7. Close the box.

  8. Seal the box with the tape provided.*

Return your MacBook to Apple

Choose your country or region:

United States and Canada

  1. Find the name of the courier on the return shipping label.

  2. Visit the courier’s website to find a drop-off location.

    -FedEx

    -UPS

  3. Get a receipt from the courier.

  4. Check your new device shipment email for a link to check the status of your trade-in device.

Australia

A trade-in kit will be delivered to you before courier collection.

  1. Get a receipt from the courier.

  2. Check your new device shipment email for a link to check the status of your trade-in device.

China mainland

The courier will bring a trade-in kit to collect your MacBook.

  1. Get a receipt from the courier.

  2. Check your new device shipment email for a link to check the status of your trade-in device.

Hong Kong

  1. Choose a scheduled pickup or drop-off at designated locations. If you choose pickup, the courier will bring a trade-in kit. For drop-off, the trade-in kit will be available at the drop-off location.

  2. Get a receipt from the courier.

  3. Check your new device shipment email for a link to check the status of your trade-in device.

Japan

The courier will bring a trade-in kit to collect your MacBook.

  1. Get a receipt from the courier.

  2. Check your new device shipment email for a link to check the status of your trade-in device.

Korea

A trade-in kit will be delivered to you for drop-off.

  1. Drop off your device at a designated location.

  2. Get a receipt from the staff.

  3. Check your new device shipment email for a link to check the status of your trade-in

Taiwan

The courier will bring a trade-in kit to collect your MacBook.

  1. Get a receipt from the courier.

  2. Check your new device shipment email for a link to check the status of your trade-in device.

Vietnam

  1. Choose a scheduled pickup or drop-off at designated locations. If you choose pickup, the courier will bring a trade-in kit. For drop-off, the trade-in kit will be available at the drop-off location.

  2. Get a receipt from the courier.

  3. Check your new device shipment email for a link to check the status of your trade-in device.
